2015 NHL Draft pleased every Latvian hockey fan with three Latvian players drafted which is repeated best result and previously it happened in 1992 and 2002. The fact, that three Latvians are drafted in a single year happens only once in a decade, for it self is interesting. I don't want to run ahead of a time, but I have suspicion that this could be one of the best drafts in the history of Latvian hockey.
Every NHL draft for Latvian hockey fan comes with great hopes and expectations, and this year wasn’t the exception. The first drafted Latvian in 2015 NHL Draft was Mārtiņš Dzierkals F (Martins Dzierkals) which was drafted in 3rd round with #68 overall by Toronto Maple Leafs. Martins Dzierkals became the 8th highest drafted Latvian in NHL draft history and first Maple Leaf drafted Latvian player. While some of the fans was pleased by this pick only and they could end the 2015 NHL Draft the continuation was better than expected. In 5th round with #130 overall was drafted Kārlis Čukste D (Karlis Cukste) and with #142 overall Rūdolfs Balcers F (Rudolfs Balcers) by Sharks. At this point even three drafted Latvian players became too few but unfortunately the 2015 NHL Draft for Latvian hockey fans ended there.
Once in a decade
2015 NHL draft with three drafted Latvian players was repeated best result in Latvian hockey history. Previously it happened in 2002 and 1992. Let us see the commons and the differences between these three drafts.
Causes and consequences
Small addition to the related article - Sweet under 18 about Latvian national under 18 ice hockey team and its two best tournaments in 2012 and in 2015. In 2012 NHL Draft in 1st round with #14 overall were drafted Zemgus Girgensons who didn't play at the U18 World Championship and Teodors Bļugers in 2nd round with #52 overall who played in U18 World Championships but was drafted as North American prospect. So I'll pay the attention only on the European prospects.
