November 18, 2014 was not only 96th anniversary of independence day of Latvia but also a return of Artūrs "The Wall" Irbe into the NHL line up. Despite that 47 years old Artūrs Irbe did not played that night, the fact it self is notable. This game almost became legendary and the last time, where two Latvians played in one team was in 2001-2002 season.
Once a goalie, always a goalie. /Artūrs Irbe/
In one of my previous posts I wrote about Latvian player rivalries in NHL, where you could learn about which Latvians have played against each other and how many times. Now I have summarized statistics about Latvian players who has played as teammates in NHL.
Artūrs Irbe and Sandis Ozoliņš has played 12 games against each other, but 230 in six seasons as teammates in Sharks and Hurricanes. Interesting fact is that, when Sandis Ozoliņš was traded from Sharks to Avalanche in 1995-1996 Sandis Ozolinsh won the Stanley Cup. Sandis Ozoliņš was traded again from Hurricanes to Panthers in 2001-2002 season, but in Stanley Cup finals competed Hurricanes lost to Red Wings.
Herberts Vasiļjevs and Pēteris Skudra has played one game against each other and one game as teammates in 2001-2002 season in Vancouver Canucks. The most interesting was a 5 game span in Penguins season 1998-1999 where Pēteris Skudra and Viktors Ignatjevs played as teammates. In this short time span Pēteris Skudra recorded his first shutout and Viktors Ignatjevs recorded his only assist in NHL.
Sergejs Žoltoks and Grigorijs Panteļējevs has played 6 games as teammates in Bruins 1992-1993 season. Sergejs Žoltoks and Grigorijs Panteļējevs have played three seasons as teammates in AHL and one in IHL. They will be remembered not just only a teammates but also a very good friends.
