While the NHL teams are competing for last playoff spots and Latvia men’s national ice hockey team are preparing for the 2015 IIHF world championship my hard work season has started and time for writing hockey articles and summarize statistics are decreasing. But somewhere in the middle has ended Latvian hockey league. And no, Ogre isn't some mythical green creature and this article won't be about some act of cannibalism.
In 2014-15 season Latvian hockey league finals competed regular season winners HK MOGO (city - Rīga) and previous season final series runner up HK Kurbads (city - Ogre). This final series was notable because in each of these two teams played well known Latvian hockey veterans. Oļegs Sorokins in HK Mogo and Rodrigo Laviņš in HK Kurbads. Both were born in 1974 and plays in defence. Oļegs Sorokins has played in 7 IIHF World Championships and 1 Winter Olympic games. Rodrigo Laviņš has played in 14 IIHF World Championships and 3 Winter Olympic games, he holds the most games played record in Latvia men’s national ice hockey team with 230 games played. While Oļegs Sorokins delighted hockey fans with his pirouettes Rodrigo Laviņš holds our hearts and sympathies for his beautiful hip checks for decades.
Rodrigo Laviņš in all his glory.
HK MOGO as regular season champions playoff round started from half finals where they had to complete just formalities with HK Zemgale/LLU (Jelgava) which 3:2 won last year champions HS Rīga/Prizma in quarterfinals. For HK Kurbads the road to finals weren't so easy as it looks, 3:0 in quarterfinals against Ogre/Sāga 97, a bit tighter games against HK Liepāja 3:1. Full playoff bracket - here.
Final series ended with HK MOGO 4:2 (2:5; 5:2; 4:3, 0:2; 3:2; 5:0) victory over HK Kurbads. While HK MOGO has won the finals in their first year, HK Kurbads has participated two seasons and in both of them they finished 2nd. The sad fact is that the no team from Ogre has ever won the Latvian hockey league champion title, ASK Ogre finished 2nd five times of six seasons, Ogres Essamika finished 2nd two times of five seasons and now unlucky HK Kurbads two times second in two seasons. Some people this could be a comedy but for others horror.

What happens when you have enough
And one if my brightest memory about Latvian hockey league is related with previous mentioned ASK Ogre in 2006-07 final series against HK Rīga 2000. In this series HK Rīga 2000 won the champion title fourth year in a row and ASK Ogre finished 2nd third time in four seasons.
Due to lack of time I haven’t see much of this final series, but this whole season raises my hopes for a better future in Latvian hockey league. For your attention I have created a page for Latvian hockey league, there you can find the most titled Latvian hockey teams and Latvian champions from 1932. Due to lack of quality available information there is not much there but it’s good for start - Champions of Latvian hockey league.
